Do you feel like you have a pretty good understanding of the best ways to maintain good oral health? Like many people, you may think that it’s about brushing, flossing, and visiting your dentist routinely.
If so, you’re off to a good start because those support good oral health. But recently, a worldwide survey was conducted in 12 countries that indicate a significant gap between what is accurate and what people think they know.
Myth 1: Brush and Floss Right after Your Meal
The results of the survey show that an average of 50 percent of people believe that it’s good for your oral health to brush your teeth immediately after eating.
But the American Dental Association recommends a 30-minute wait after meals because sugars and acid in the foods you consume break down dental enamel for 20 minutes or longer after eating. If you interrupt this process by immediately brushing and flossing after you eat, you can actually brush away small particles of dental enamel.
Myth 2: Rinse and Spit Immediately after You Brush
About 70 percent of those interviewed think you should rinse your mouth and spit immediately after brushing.
But the fact is that you want to get the most out of the preventive benefits of fluoride in your toothpaste, so waiting a few minutes to rinse after brushing is the healthier choice.
Myth 3: Substitute Healthy Fruit Juices for Sodas
It seems logical that drinking fruit juice is a healthier choice than soda, and about half those surveyed agree.
The truth is that fruit juices are often loaded with sugar and they are highly acidic. When bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar, it produces acid which eats away at dental enamel and causes cavities. Your best bet is to minimize or eliminate all sugary drinks, and that includes fruit juices.
